The Task Force developed a Programme of Action for Sea Alarm.
November 2000
Sea Alarm’s First Conference was held in November in Pieterburen, the Netherlands. The objective was to bring together a representative group of European marine wildlife rehabilitators and discuss cooperation at a European level. A Task Force of 11 representatives was formed, which was charged with the development of a Programme of Action.
Sea Alarm participated in the second meeting of International Alliance of Oiled Wildlife Responders in Hastings, UK, where the possibility of producing a document on best practices was explored.
March 2000
The International Alliance of Oiled Wildlife Responders was formed following the Effects of Oil on Wildlife Conference in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, USA. Sea Alarm is one of the founding members of this worldwide coalition of oiled wildlife organisations and experts.
Sea Alarm presented the results and recommendations from the feasibility study at the Effects of Oil on Wildlife Conference, in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, USA.
December 1999
Sea Alarm Foundation was founded under Dutch Law.
September 1999 – March 2000
A feasibility study was conducted by Hugo Nijkamp (Argo Consultancy) and Kees Camphuysen, which received positive responses from all those that were interviewed, including IFAW, ITOPF, RSPCA, Shell, UNEP, and Medicins Sans Frontières. The subsequent report included recommendations on how to build a network and what should be included in the first business plan.
Throughout 1998-1999
Preliminary meetings in the Netherlands were held, with the view of exploring the possibility of creating an international network of oiled wildlife rehabilitators. Discussions with representatives of UNEP, Shell and others, resulted in the commissioning of a feasibility study. The results of this study eventually led to the decision to formally establish Sea Alarm Foundation.
